Connections and Disconnections: The predictable ups and downs for parents and children as they learn about themselves and each other

Children’s development happens only in the context of relationships, and as children grow and change, their relationships too must change. There is certainly joy in this process, yet also challenge and stress as parents and children build their deep emotional connection with each other as well as weather the stressful experiences of disconnection that the natural process of development towards autonomy and independence calls forth. Come learn about these predictable periods of increased stress and disconnection, called, “touchpoints,” and how we can support families through them by preparing ahead of time and anticipating the strengths and new skills that will emerge from the process. The workshop will include interactive PowerPoint presentation material and video content of provider-parent-child interactions as well as skill-building opportunities for chat discussion. REGISTER

Talking with Families about Developmental Screenings & Concerns

Release date: March 20, 2024 65 minutes

Conversations about developmental screening results and concerns can be time-consuming and anxiety-provoking for families and for family-facing providers. Yet the benefits are clear: when families and their child’s providers have productive conversations about a child’s development, they are better equipped to work as a team to co-create and follow through on a collaborative plan that supports the best outcomes for the child. The Development is a Journey Conversation Roadmap was created to simplify, support, and strengthen these important and often challenging conversations. The Roadmap is designed to facilitate these conversations with seven short and simple steps to actively engage parents and other caregivers in planning for their child’s developmental needs, and enhance the provider-parent partnership, especially when parents and providers find themselves having different perspectives about the child and the possible challenge.

This webinar will introduce participants to this strengths-based, relationally-focused, family-centered tool and process for engaging families and providers in collaborative partnership to address developmental challenges in service of best outcomes for children and their caregivers.
